What you need to buy a handgun & long guns in California.

** Must be 21 years old.**

1.) Have a valid CA REAL ID with current address.

**IF you do not have a real ID (ID states "Federal Limits Apply"), you must also provide a valid US Passport, Birth Certificate, or Certificate of Naturalization** 

NOTE: If your CA ID does not have your current physical address, you must provide a valid government issued document (within 1 year) with your current address (eg. DMV vehicle registration, CA Hunting / Fishing License, department issued letterhead)


2.) Have an FSC - Firearms Safety Certificate  - may obtain one after taking a test for $25.00

3.) Proof of residency. 

A utility bill from within the last 3 months;

A signed (and notarized) residential lease agreement;
A property deed; or
Military permanent duty station orders indicating assignment in California

 

ALL DOCUMENTS MUST HAVE MATCHING NAMES AND ADDRESSES.

 After paying for your handgun, you’ll  need to wait 10 days before you can pick it up. 

This applies to both guns purchased from the store, and one that you bought from a private seller.  

All firearms purchased in California must have a CA DOJ-approved safety device.

This is either a trigger lock, or some other type of lock that makes the firearm unusable when the device is engaged.
