Requirements for purchasing a handgun in the state of California Non Law Enforcement

•You must be 21 years of age.

• You must have a current, valid Calif.Driver’s License or ID card – it may not be suspended, temporary, expired or revoked.

• Military ID is acceptable with copy of orders stating you are stationed in California.

• You must have a proof of residency (POR) –California accepts several different documents. Most commonly used are a vehicle registration, or a current utility bill from your residence. The name and address on the POR must match your CDL or ID card or the address we are using to register your gun. We can provide you with a list of additional acceptable documents.

• You must have a Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC). If you do not have one, we will issue one to you at the time of purchase. You will be required to take a 30-question test on firearm safety and successfully pass this test The fee for the test is $25 and the card is valid for 5 years. Certain people are exempt from this requirement such as full-time sworn police officers; active duty military, concealed weapons permit holders and some others. We will determine if you are exempt at the time of purchase.

• The current fee to register a gun is $37.19. This includes the required California Department of Justice Dealer Record of Sale.

• There is a 10-day wait on all guns in California. You will purchase the gun and we will give you a receipt with a pick-up date. During the 10-day wait the California Department of Justice will run a comprehensive background check on you. Convicted felons may not purchase a gun. Certain violent misdemeanors may also prohibit you from purchasing a gun. A complete list of prohibitions can be found at the California Department of Justice Website.

• At the end of the 10-day wait you may return to the store and pickup your firearm. You must bring your receipt and your Calif.Driver’s License, ID card, or Military ID. The law states that the waiting period is ten 24-hour periods. Weapons must be picked up within 30 days of date of registration.

• Firearms must be picked up within 30 days of date of registration.  If you do not take physical possession of the firearm within 30 days of submission of the DROS ,  your DROS will be cancelled and you are required to pay a $50.00 Cancellation/Storage Fee.  If you still want to take possession of the firearm, you must repeat the entire DROS process, including payment of DROS fees of $37.19 and new 10-day waiting period.

• A private citizen may only purchase one handgun in a 30-day period. Consignment sales and private party transfers are exempt from this rule.

• Lastly, you will be given a Handgun Safety Demonstration. This demonstration will be done at the time of sale by one of our certified sales staff.
